Heineken Cup Semi Finals PreJudgement

With my keen interest in all rugby I decided to get a more expert opinion in for these PreJudgements. I have asked Hugh O'Connor to be my guest blogger for the Heineken Cup games. Hugh is an Irishman living in Dublin with his finger on the pulse in a number of sporting fields. (Hugh's Blogs: European Tour Golf , New York Cricket & 147 Break Snooker)

Here is his PreJudgement of the upcoming Semi Finals:

This weekend sees the final four teams hit the pitch in the Heineken Cup semi-finals, to decide who will face each other in Cardiff for the European crown.
The semi-final line-up is a perfect mix of experience, hunger, young talent and, perhaps most importantly, features teams from Ireland, England and France. It's been a lean couple of years for Welsh rugby and, based on this year's Heineken Cup, Wales will have their work cut out this autumn at the World Cup. Leinster are continuing their fine few seasons with a third consecutive semi-final berth, while the seemingly ever-present Toulouse survived a late fightback against Biarritz to book their place. Perpignan managed to see off Jonny Wilkinson's Toulon at home to set up an away fixture with Northampton, who managed to time their recovery from an appalling mid-season domestic slump to perfection, dominating Ulster to make the last four.

Leinster v. Toulouse

When you say the words "Heineken Cup", a few teams spring to mind. Leinster dealt with one of those in their quarter-final when they beat Leicester at home. Their semi-final opponents are only more so. Toulouse, winners last year, with four wins overall and a pair of runners-up finishes, are a team that always turn up for a European match. The instant the red and black hits the turf, you know you're in for something special. Leinster are out to avenge their semi-final defeat to Toulouse last year, and a 90% home crowd might be the perfect platform on which to build a victory.
Leinster have shown a certain guile this year hat we haven't seen before - you get the feeling that they now know they're one of those teams no one wants in a Heineken Cup game. They've played their opponents, the conditions, the crowds, and the referee well. At the Aviva stadium in Dublin they've been dominant, with their crushing Clermont Auvergne before Christmas being the best example.
Toulouse are a French team, and so it's tough to use their domestic form as a guide. So far, they've done what they've needed to do in the Heineken Cup. When they've had to go up a gear, they have. They'll need everything they have against Leinster on Saturday, and even though we haven't seen top form yet, you get the feeling that they've just been keeping it form for the last 11 months.

Key Clashes

For me, you've got to look at two areas. Both sides have a great back line, with the French in particular capable of weaving the most beautiful magic a rugby fan could wish to see. But the men in charge of the game will have to be on their mettle. Johnny Sexton has turned into one of the finest outhalves in world rugby - undoubtedly the best 10 in the Heineken Cup all season, he's added a nifty tactical game to his unerring place-kicking. He's shown his cool in Europe before, and Leinster need him to take control early on.
Up against Sexton is David Skrela, a man looking to end his Toulouse career on a high before moving to Clermont in the summer. Skrela has done it all before, most notably a year ago, and despite French coach Marc Lievremont's determination to keep him out of the national side has managed to continue to prove his worth in the Top 14. He's as canny as they come, and he's got a phenomenal backline to unleash when the kick doesn't seem the right option.

As with any tussle between 10s, it's crucial to take some early victories. Sexton will need to get on top of Skrela from the off, and I think the young Irishman will manage it. Dublin won't be rowdy when the Frenchman's taking his kicks, but he could still do with nailing a couple early - French teams are developing a habit of bottling it in Ireland.

The other battle is in the back rows. In Jamie Heaslip, Leinster have the best number 8 in the world - there I said it - and Sean O'Brien at 6 has been the story of the season. He's rampaged his way through any line he's come up against, carrying metre after metre, refusing to be put down, and scoring his share of tries from the back row. In pole position to take him down is French captain Thierry Dusatoir - for those of you who don't know him too well, my fantasy back row would be McCaw, Dusatoir, and Heaslip. He's magnificent for France and Toulouse, it feels like he's won about 7 Heineken Cups already, and he will be pumped.
As with the outhalves, it's crucial to win the first scrum. Leinster have scrummaged very well this year, but there have been times when Cian Healy (watch out for him this autumn) has given away penalty after penalty at the breakdown. He'll have French hooker William Servat not too far away from him at the crunch time, and no one's better than Servat at leading a scrum from the front.

PreJudgement

Sexton should be able to take control of the game early on, but it'll come down to the scrum. 1-5, Toulouse look the better outfit to me, so it's crucial that O'Brien and Heaslip try to dominate from early on. The French back row will be good for at least one try, but with Brian O'Driscoll in attack and defence I think Leinster will be able to handle them.
French teams away from home are notoriously difficult to predict, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say Leinster, backed up by 35,000 fans, can do the needful.
Leinster by 6.

Northampton Saints v. Perpignan

Many see this as the match that will decide who is the runner-up in this year's trophy and, while I agree, it could still be a fascinating battle. Straightaway, let's mention that fact about French teams away again - I think that could make the difference in this game, because otherwise it's pretty close to call. Add to that the fact that Perpignan have lost a couple of key forwards in Jerome Schuster and Nicolas Mas and they could be in for a tough battle.
Northampton started the season like a bullet train, blazing a trail to the top of the Premiership and winning all six of their European group games. Between Christmas and February they proceed to play some of the worst rugby of the last few years, but crucially timed it perfectly for the European break. Two weeks ago they showed that they're still up for the Heineken challenge with a well-deserved 10-point victory over Ulster.

Key Clashes

In the semi-final, Northampton absolutely bulldozed the Ulster scrum. With captain and hooker Dylan Hartley at the helm, and English starlet Courtney Lawes in the second row, they look a really class set piece. Hartley has blossomed as captain, showing a leadership and determination that had a lot to do with England's efforts at a Six Nations Grand Slam. With Perpignan missing Schuster in the front row, Hartley, and Soane Tonga'huia, the MASSIVE Samoan at his side, I can't see the French standing up to the English onslaught. The Saints' forwards also look better in the loose, with Tonga'uiha notching up his fair share of tries this season.

If Perpignan are to have a hope here, they need to attack Stephen Myler. The Northampton outhalf is a streaky player at the best of times, and the semi-final pressure could unnerve him. He was fantastic against Ulster in the quarters, but a few fluffed kicks early on and he can be a lost cause. Nicolas Laharrague won't be a name known to many outside of France, and it will be up to him to prove himself away from home. Get on Myler early in the game and the Saints are in trouble.

The final clash to look at is full back. For the Saints, Ben Foden has been his dynamic best this season, linking up with English team mate Christ Ashton at 14 to score heaps of tries. Good under a high ball, and with the spirit of Mils Muliaina in the counter-attack, Foden will look to go after his opposite number from the get-go. That's Jerome Porical, again, unknown south of the equator, but a dangerous player. Both love to run the ball, and it will be fascinating to see who can force the error first.

PreJudgement

With the class of Ashton and Foden making up for the inexperience in the Saints' back line, and the power of Hartley and Tonga'uiha up front, Northampton will look to control the game from the first kick. Perpignan have been known to crumble after an early setback, and even with players of the quality of David Marty in the backs, I can't see the French managing this one away from home. I see the Saints having a more comfortable time than most commentators seem to think.
Northampton by 11.

SupeRugby Round 11 Prejudgement:

FIRSTLY, a big congratulations to the Lions for securing a 4 point bye win this week. Unfortunately they are still rooted to the bottom of the table. There are 2 top of the Conference Derbies this week and they are going to be crackers, Highlanders v Blues and Stormers v Sharks. Purely from a NZ and SA point of view they are huge but in terms of the combined conference these results will affect the top 8. Will the Brumbies start their away leg with a win and revive their season? Will the Rebels pull the wool over the Waratahs eyes? Only time will tell...

Highlanders v Blues (Dunedin)
Luke McAlister and Adam Thomson both return to the starting line up for the Blues and Highlanders respectively. There will be a lot of focus on the two fly-halves as the old war horse Tony Brown had a great game last week will be up against Stephan Brett. As all derbies should be, this is going to be a hard physical game and no team will go into the changing room at the end of the game wondering if they could have done better. I don't think the Highlanders have it in them after last week.
PreJudgement: Blues by 6

Cheetahs v Brumbies (Bloemfontein)
The Cheetahs will be looking to drive some nails into the coffin of the Brumbies by taking a win on Friday night. The Brumbies, I am sure are going to relish being out of  'pressure cooker' that is Australia after their worst start in SupeRugby history. With the appointment of Jake White onto their coaching staff for next season, maybe the Brumbies will pick it up a bit on the Bosses home soil.
PreJudgement: Brumbies by 11

Hurricanes v Reds (Wellington)
One would expect the Reds to walk all over the hapless Hurricanes, but there is a little bell inside my head warning me that they are still a dangerous team. Then I look at the injuries they have had and the loooong flight home. After all of that I realise that they are playing the mighty Reds. This is going to be a horrible return home after touring and its not going to end well for the home team. What theatrics are we going to see out of Quade Cooper this week?
PreJudgement: Reds by 9

Waratahs v Rebels (Sydney)
The Rebels are due a win or have they used up all their first season 'get out of jail' free cards? I think they have and we should settle down and watch the Waratahs dominate the new boys. The loss of Drew Mitchell is significant but he is replaced by Soseni Anesi who can produce the goods. Kurtley Beale moves to fullback and Berrick Barnes wears the number 10 jumper.
PreJudgement: Waratahs by 19

Force v Crusaders (Perth)
Richie McCaw returns as captain for the Crusaders and immediately everyone sits up and takes notice. There are no more 'rested' players on the bench as they all seem to be starting this week. Todd Blackadder will be looking to take 5 points home from this game. Willie Ripia will be starting a t 10 with the talented James O'Connor outside him. It is also great to see Matt Dunning starting again for the Force.
PreJudgement: Crusaders by 15

Bulls v Chiefs (Pretoria)
The Bulls are not going to get out of their crap form this week. Not even with all the hype around what their sponsors are getting them to do, I think its shocking! The Chiefs have come off a tough game last week but the Bulls are risking Dewald Potgieter and Francois Hougaard very soon after injury.
PreJudgement: Chiefs by 7

Stormers v Sharks (Cape Town)
The Stormers captain, Schalk Burger, has been downplaying their win in the shark tank a few weeks ago in the media. The Sharks have been downplaying the revenge factor this game has....ITS ALL LIES! The Stormers and Sharks want to beat the living daylights out of each other. The Stormers want a double and the Sharks want Revenge! There is are no two ways about it. John Smit stays at hooker and captain for the Sharks, with Bismark du Plessis on the bench. Peter Grant has a late fitness test on Friday to see if he can play on Saturday. Ross Skeate returns to Cape Town where here played for SACS , UCT and the Stormers.
PreJudgement: Sharks by 9

SupeRugby Round 10 Recap:

The Bulls and Waratahs failed to secure victories and put pressure on the Sharks. The 'Tahs are 6 points behind the Sharks but I think that is it for them this season and the Bulls can pack it in too. The Sharks are going to have to keep their wits about them this week to beat the stormers in Newlands. The Reds and the Highlanders are looking awesome this season and I think the Reds will take it. The Highlanders have done so many teams a favour by showing the likes of The Reds, Stormers and Sharks that the Crusaders can be beaten. We are in for one of the best SupeRugby finishes ever seen this season.

  • As expected, the Blues ran out winners on Friday against the Rebels. The Rebels challenged the NZ team late on in the first half and trailed by 6 at half time. After the break the Blues stepped up their game and put the game to bed. Danny Cipriani has proved to be a problem on defense and that channel was attacked during the game. The Blues have moved to second on the group log and lead the NZ conference. Blues winning 40-23

  • The Highlanders did what many thought was impossible, beat the Crusaders. The Crusaders were missing a few players and who they weren't missing they benched. Poor coaching in my opinion but it could be argued as rotational as well as blooding new players. I think you need to secure wins whenever you can...Lets hope this doesn't bite them in the ass later. Having said that, the Highlanders were awesome. Tony Brown was brilliant and he deserved the recognition for this win. Highlanders win 26-18

  • The Reds took the dismal Waratahs at home on Saturday and manged to secure the most wins on the trot for the Queensland franchise. The Waratahs held the lead briefly in the first half but never capitalised. I am sure they were warned about 1 player and they did not stop him, Quade Cooper got all the 19 points for the Reds! Not only that but it was a full house too, a try , conversion, penalties and a drop kick. Reds winning 19-15

  • The Force notched up back to back wins on Saturday against, believe it or not, the current SupeRugby Champions. The Bulls are having a season to forget and will no doubt be loving the fact that they are at home this week. I don't think their fans will be too receptive to them this week though. The Bulls got most of their points when James O'Connor was in the sin bin but looked extremely pedestrian and one dimensional. It was great to see Matt Dunning back on the park for the Force. Force win 26-21

  • The Sharks looked great on Saturday with Patrick Lambie directing the backline again. His kicking was a little off but everything else was brilliant. The Sharks and Highlanders were head to head leading into half time at 13 points a piece. However, after the 55th minute it was one way traffic with he sharks dotting down 3 more times. The Sharks were in desperate need of a bonus point win in the hunt for a wild card spot. This win pulls them away from the Bulls and Waratahs. Now for the Stormers at Newlands on Saturday! Sharks win 40-24

  • All I can say is, the poor Lions! They are always in the mix but just can't seem to push themselves over the edge. I honestly think that they will be the comeback kids of the season in the 2012 SupeRugby competition. They were only, seemingly, out of contention in the 53rd minute when Dwayne Sweeney ran in for a converted try and trailed the visitors by 31-16. Then in true Lions spirit fought their way back to within a point in the 72nd minute. They were however not able to close it out for a win and lost their 9th game out of 10. The Chiefs winning 34-30

There is a pretty clear picture as to who will be in the play offs later this year but don't tell the Waratahs that. Right now it is just going to be securing that place and fighting for higher positions in the play offs. there were two outstanding players this week for me, deciding which one will get the award will be tough. both Tony Brown and Quade Cooper were instrumental in their teams derby wins this weekend.

Player of the Week: Tony Brown
Team of the Week: The Highlanders
WTF of the Week: Greg Clark unhappy with Jake White's move to Brumbies.                                                             "Personally I'd like to see an Aussie in charge"
Anyone is better than what they are currently doing there...
Ouch of the Week: Drew Mitchell

SupeRugby Round 10 PreJudgement:

With two top local derbies that influence a lot in the competition, Saturday is going to be a cracker. Crusaders are at home to the Highlanders which isn't looking good for the visiting team. The big one of the weekend is by far the Reds v Waratahs. If the Waratahs lose this that could be the end of their season...

Blues v Rebels (Auckland)
I feel for the Rebels here, as they always bounce back after a defeat. The Blues, however, are way too strong and have been slowly but surely growing in confidence this season. Between the strong forward pack and mesmerizing backline players the Blues will secure a bonus point win on Friday. How many points the Rebels score in reply is always tough to call...
PreJudgement: Blues by 14

Crusaders v Highlanders (Nelson)
Sonny Bill Williams has been benched for this fixture....Very Very interesting....The Crusaders have made a few changes for this game, with Sean Maitland being benched too. Is this a case of a great rotation policy or is it a silly move? Adam Thompson is noticeably missing from the Highlanders team due to injury.
PreJudgement: Crusaders by 11

Reds v Waratahs (Brisbane)
Game of the weekend by far. I am particularly looking forward to the Half Back pairings going up against each other. Will Genia & Quade Cooper vs Luke Burgess & Kurtley Beale will be a colossus battle of skill kicking ability and the fight for the Aussie Jumper come the Tri Nations and RWC. There is no ways on earth you are allowed to talk about the Queensland Reds and not mention Digby Ioane, see why here. His match up against Drew Mitchell will be great too, I think Mitchell has the gas to beat him but Digby Ioane has the power to run over him.
PreJudgement: Reds by 8

Force v Bulls (Perth)
This is going to be tough to call, as the Force have been poor but managed a win last week. The Bulls....well they have been poor but have two more wins to their name. It's going to be tough in Perth but I think the South African side will take this one
PreJudgement: Bulls by 5

Sharks v Hurricanes (Durban)
This is a must win for the Sharks if they want to ease the pressure off themselves to qualify for the knockouts. The Hurricanes have been in Cape Town this week training and will be traveling to Durban in the next two days. It is a great relief for the Sharks supporters to see Patrick Lambie back in the starting line up. Ross Skeate pairs up with Sykes at Lock and John Smit starting at hooker due to an injury to Bismark du Plessis. Will the Hurricanes play to their potential or will they retreat into their shell?
PreJudgement: Sharks by 9

Lions v Chiefs (Johannesburg)
I think the Lions might be in a spot of bother here...The Chiefs will be looking to end the Easter Weekends fixtures with a bonus point win to themselves. They will be looking to get their season rejuvenated by beating the bottom of the table Lions.
PreJudgement: Chiefs by 21

The Bulls and Waratahs will be hoping that the Hurricanes do them a favour and beat the Sharks in Durban on Saturday. This will boost their chances of qualifying for the knockouts should they win this weekend. Noticeable absentees this weekend are Bismark du Plessis, Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter. Some welcome returns see Phil Waugh, Patrick Lambie and John Smit (starting at Hooker) return.

PinkRugby.com

This is a very interesting rugby site I have come across...for the Ladies and there is great rugby opinions too (more for the men)

I am a big fan of growing the game as much as possible and I know you must start with the fairer sex.... Girlfriends and Wives worldwide hate weekends because of 1 thing - RUGBY. What better way to get them more interested than by showing half naked athletes. These guys are the unconventional 'Players of the Week'.

'Player of the Week' for a man: The guy that scored more tries than anyone, kicked more conversions and tackled (preferably an Aussie, Kiwi or Pom) guys into next week.

'Player of the Week' for a woman: OOOOOH.....he's CUTE.

Coupled with hunky men is a 'Rugby 101' tab to gain a better knowledge of the rules....Men all over are thanking our lucky stars not too have to explain these already challenging rules. Especially at breakdown. I think some of the men should brush up on the rules too (maybe a couple of Refs) ...HA HA

PinkRugby not only tackles the basics of the game but appeals to men and rugby supporters all over with good stories and interesting predictions. This is well worth having a look at and its also great to get some insights from Australian supporters.

Well done PinkRugby and I look forward to many a good read especially for the rest of SupeRugby , Tri-Nations and the upcoming World Cup

SupeRugby Round 9 Recap:

Bye Bye Brumbies and Bulls and hello to the Reds and Highlanders. At the start of the season you may have put the Reds in the top half of the table but it was unlikely that you would have placed them right on the top.The Highlanders...wow, what an awesome season and a big middle finger to all the doubters!

  • The Crusaders won what was honestly a closer game than the scoreline suggests. With only 4 points separating the teams at half time, we were always going to be in for a fantastic second half, except the Chiefs didn't play to their full potential and the Crusaders put on 17 second half points to their 3. Crusaders winning 34-16
  • It was always going to be tough for the unpredictable Rebels to win this one. The Highlanders are in great form and this season has proved that teamwork and unity beats almost anything. The Rebels sneaked a 3 point lead in the 8th minute and held onto it for 12 minutes...that's when the Highlanders stepped up their game. they ran in 6 tries in total and dominated the entire game. Highlanders winning 40-18

  • This fixture didn't go according to plan (for the Waratahs) due tho the strength of both teams. Hats off to the Blues team as they destroyed the Waratahs with some great kicking, although fortuitous, and brilliant play by Luke McAlister. The Blues dominated all facets of play and managed to hold off a late surge by the Australian Franchise. Blues winning 31-17

  • The Reds carried on marching on in their quest to winning their first SupeRugby title. The Bulls were no match for for the young and motivated Reds side. It was a relatively close encounter but you never expected the Bulls to come back and win the contest. Lets not forget the try celebration of the decade from Digby Ioane! Reds winning 39-30

  • With the Stormers fielding their 3rd choice flyhalf after 13 minutes, with an injury to Gary van Aswegen, you thought that this might be a closer encounter than earlier anticipated. The Stormers, however, stuck to their guns and game plan and finished the Lions off in the second half. The first 40 minutes were a closely contested affair but the Lions lost impetus in the second half and payed the price. Stormers winning 33-19

  • The Cheetahs have been so competitive this season and to most peoples surprise. They lead by 3 at half time which propped all supporters up in their chairs eagerly anticipating the second half. You believed as a neutral and Cheetahs supporter that they could get one over the poorly performing Hurricanes side.It went down to the wire as the Cheetahs had 4 point lead until Jeremy Thrush broke the South Africans hearts in the 79th minute. What a game this was and will this break the Cheetahs hearts? The Hurricane team will also be hoping this will turn their season around as they face the Sharks in Durban this week. Hurricanes winning 50-47

  • The last game of the weekend saw the Brumbies SupeRugby hopes and dreams flushed down the toilet as they lost to the Force in Canberra. Matt Giteau got the home team off to a great start with a penalty, try and conversion in the first 26 minutes. It went pretty much downhill for them after that as the Force slowly chipped away at the lead and gained ascendancy in the game. It only really got away from the Brumbies in the 68th minute where the Force took the lead and never looked back. Force winning 27-19

Cheetahs, Brumbies and Stormers on a Bye this weekend. (Massive points for the Cheetahs and Brumbies, maybe this is what they need to turn their season around) The Stormers will be loking to rest some players and get a few more off the injury list.

Team of the Week: The  Queensland Reds
Player of the Week: Luke McAlister
WTF of the Week:  Digby Ioane .... doing the Caterpillar!

Saturday, 16 April 2011

Strictly come dancing....Digby Ioane

This is way to good not to be seen by everyone! Forget the try look at the celebration. By far the best in HISTORY. The commentators call it 'the caterpillar' I call it spectacular and it is something that is fit for Red Bull BC1!

SupeRugby Round 9 PreJudgement:

SupeRugby Round 9, is just one of those weeks...virtually unjudgeable. The 'dead certain' winners this weekend are not playing good rugby and on the other end of the spectrum, their opponents are. The Highlanders and Bulls need 5 points this weekend if they are going to have any hope of qualifying and the Brumbies should beat the Force along with the Crusaders beating the Chiefs.

Chiefs v Crusaders (Hamilton)
Richie McCaw is back, sitting on the bench, but back never the less. The entire rugby has waited a long time for his day of return. There is an awesome match up with the flyhalves today as Matt Berquist and Mike Delany compete for ascendancy. Mils Muliaina makes a welcome return for the chiefs today at fullback.
PreJudgement: Crusaders by 7

Rebels v Highlanders (Melbourne)
The Rebels return home and are eager to get their opening season winning streak up to 4. They are facing a team that has played extremely well as an unit and has the points to prove it. If this game goes down to the wire you would expect the Rebels to take it, so the Highlanders need to shut it down early.
PreJudgement: Rebels by 5

Blues v Waratahs (Auckland)
Tough one to call but the Waratahs have been doing the business of late. Luke Burgess had a blinder last week and will be keen to try and push his team to an away win this week. The Blues are 2 points ahead of the Waratahs and will be looking to overtake the Crusaders if the slip up against the Chiefs.
PreJudgement: Blues by 6

Reds v Bulls (Brisbane)
The Bulls have no fewer than 5 changes leading up to this vital game for both teams. If the Bulls lose, they are quite frankly in the brown stuff and if the Reds win they are sitting pretty on the log. The youthful exuberance of the Reds will feed off the fear of the Bulls. Having said that you can't expect the experience of the Bulls to falter again. I still think that when the Bulls received their fixtures before the season started they would have mentally marked a 'win' alongside this fixture....that's going to change.
PreJudgement: Reds by 9

Lions v Stormers (Johannesburg)
Peter Grant is out injured for this week and as a late replacement, Gary van Aswegen start at 10. The Lions have a few injury concerns of their own to worry about, but I think the Stormers are going to bounce back after their loss to the Reds.
PreJudgement: Stormers by 11

Cheetahs v Hurricanes (Bloemfontein)
This again is a tough one to call as the Hurricanes have battled this season along with the Cheetahs. I think that after their performances overseas, the home crowd will be well behind the Cheetahs this week and that could be the difference. The Hurricanes are due a win but Bloem is Bloem and its a tough place to go if your not totally focused.
PreJudgement: Cheetahs by 5

Brumbies v Force (Canberra)
The second Sunday game gets underway this week as the Brumbies will try and start a winning streak against the Force. The Force have not been doing well and as much as the focus has been on the Brumbies, they are still 5 points clear of their opposition on the log. As i have said in previous PreJudgements, Canberra is a tough place to go.
PreJudgement: Brumbies by 15

Tough unpredictable weekend all round, except for the Sharks as they pocket 4 points while relaxing on a KZN Game Farm. Well DONE Boys!

The BEEEEEAST

We all love shouting for the Beast when he plays. The following clip is of him playing for the Springboks against Australia in Perth. At least, if he doesn't get picked at prop we can play him at wing. Enjoy.

Wednesday, 13 April 2011

SA Players Abroad: Daan Human (Toulouse)

Daan Human has been capped 4 times for the Springboks and 26 times for the Stormers. We mostly remember the name but since he left the South African shores after the 2004 SupeRugby season we have only heard bits and bobs about this 6ft 2in prop.
Since 2004 he has been learning a bit of French and teaching a whole lot about scrummaging at Toulouse in the French Top 14 and Heineken Cup. He has been capped 139 times in the Top14 and 41 times in the Heineken Cup. Alongside team mate Shaun Sowerby, Human is making a mark in European Rugby.

Toulouse face Leinster at the Aviva Stadium in Ireland on April 30 2011, as they both fight it out for a place in the Heineken Cup Final.

Kurtley Beale Signs for the Melbourne Rebels

After Five years with the Waratahs, Kurtley Beale has decided to move. This move has surprisingly been signed with the youngest SupeRugby franchise, Melbourne Rebels.
After less than a weeks negotiations with the Rebels, Beale put pen to paper and will be strutting his stuff in the dark blue instead of the light blue of the Waratahs.
It is rumored that the Rebels are also after James O'Connor's signature which will create an interesting decision for Rebels Coach, Rod Macqueen, as to who starts at flyhalf and fullback with the likes of Cipriani, O'Connor and Beale.

Rare North & South Double Medal- FAIL!!!

In my first article on this subject (Rare North & South Double Medal) I spoke about four players that were on target for a very rare achievement.
Scott Hamilton, Pedrie Wannenberg, George Smith and Campbell Johnstone all were inline to win the Heineken Cup with their respective Northern Hemisphere Clubs. They all play for separate clubs in England, Ireland and France and WERE (operative word here) all in the Heineken Cup Quarter Finals this past weekend.

My thinking went along the lines of featuring some Southern Hemisphere players and seeing , at least one make it through to the final. The Rugby Gods, however, had something else in mind. All four of the teams featured and players concerned were unceremoniously dumped out of the top European Rugby Competition.
Not only that but at the start of the weekend we had 10 South Africans to watch in the tournament and come sunday night we now only have 4 left.

Watch this space for Heineken Cup Semi Final action at the end of the month.

Heineken Cup Quarter Final Results:
Biarritz 20 - 27 Toulouse
Northampton Saints 23 - 13 Ulster
Leinster 17 - 10 Leicester Tigers
Perpignan 29 - 25 Toulon

Ouch of the Week: Flip van der Merwe

Flip van der Merwe goes into contact in trademark Bulls fashion (With a player pushing him from behind) and gets it wrong!! A clash of heads gives him an early shower and a headache. Lets hope to see him back soon.

SupeRugby Round 8 Recap:

The Bulls got a duck, The Reds blew the Stormers away, The Brumbies finally won and the Sharks nearly expended themselves in the first half and left nothing for the second. This is pretty much how the weekend went along for SupeRugby. The combined log has chopped and changed and there are a few sides realising that there is no hope left for them. On the other hand there are 5 teams fighting for 3 positions in the knock-out stages.

  • The Highlanders would have walked into the changing room after the game on Friday thanking their lucky stars that rugby is only 80minutes long. They looked to be extremely comfortable but the Cheetahs came back in the 76th minute with a converted try from Phillip Burger. The Highlanders had to defend for the final 4 minutes to hold onto the 3 point win. Highlanders won 24-21

  • WOW! When last did you watch a SupeRugby game where a team played without scoring? Can you hear the warning bells ringing because I can. The Crusaders owned the Bulls on Friday and took them to task. The only blemish was not securing a bonus point win. Crusaders won 27-0

  • The Brumbies won the battle of the 2 most disappointing teams this season, and only just. A single point separated these 2 non-achievers and the win seemed like a SupeRugby final win for the Brumbies, as all the subs and management flocked onto the field after the final whistle. The boot of Matt Giteau lifted the hopes of the home team with a single unconverted try from winger Henry Speight. Brumbies won 17-16.

  • The Waratahs secured a comprehensive bonus point win over fellow Australian side the Western Force. The Waratahs back three have been in sublime form this season and came up with the goods again on Saturday as Drew Mitchell (2) and Kurtley Beale (1) crossed over for the visiting team. Tom Carter at inside centre started the try scoring in the29th minute. Waratahs won 31-3.

  • The Stormers fell again at yet another crucial hurdle by losing to the Reds at Newlands. The games was riddled with handling errors and the Reds capitalised on a poor Stormers performance. Last weeks JudgeRugby Player of the Week , Peter Grant, did not perform and you wonder if the absence of Jean de Villiers outside him contributed to his performance. Reds won 19-6

  • The Sharks earned a bonus point win on Saturday against the Lions but not without a little second half resistance from the visitors. The Sharks had already scored 3 tries by half time and a bonus point win was on everyone's mind. The Lions however, had a different plan. Out of pure grit and defensive strength they held the Sharks off and it was only in the 81st minute that Charl McLeod managed to squirm over for the 4th try. Sharks won 27-3

    SupeRugby Round 8 Prejudgement:

This weeks games will define the season for many of the teams. A win for the Reds, Stormers or Crusaders will almost secure a play off place, wins for the Sharks and Highlanders puts them back into the knock out wild card qualification. A loss for the Brumbies or Hurricanes and their season would be pretty much over.

    Highlanders v Cheetahs (Carisbrook, Dunedin)
The Cheetahs are hopefully going to be concentrating on the game and not coming home! It's the South Africans last touring game before they head home. SupeRugby Round 8 kicks off with the Highlanders as the favorites for this game, with the opportunity to move higher up the ladder into Wild Card Territory.
    PreJudgement: Highlanders by 12

Crusaders v Bulls (Fraser Park, Timaru)
Game of the weekend number 1 and with Dan Carter sitting out with a hamstring injury, Matt Berquist gets a start at flyhalf for probably the most exciting backline ever fielded. The Bulls will fancy their chances against the Crusaders with Carter not available as well as coming off a win last week. Morne Steyn didn't win too many fans with his drop kicks last week but as boring as it is to watch, it wins games and adds three points.
    PreJudgement: Crusaders by 9

Brumbies v Hurricanes (Canberra Stadium, Canberra)
Wow, this could go one of two ways, riddled with errors, bad kicking and poor hands or it could be the game of the season. Both teams need a win (more than oxygen right now) and with the talent they both have available to them lets hope we are in for a quality 80 minutes. I think The Hurricanes might find the trip too much to deal with as the Australian capital is a tough place to visit.
    PreJudgement: Brumbies by 12

Force v Waratahs (Perth Oval, Perth)
James O'Connor has been moved to fullback for this encounter to give Willie Ripia his first start at flyhalf this season. Ex Force centre and wing Ryan Cross has hit out at his old team mates for not closing out games. I am sure this will add some extra niggle to Saturdays game.
    PreJudgement: Waratahs by 7

Stormers v Reds (Newlands, Cape Town)
Game of the weekend number 2. The build up to this game has been awesome. Everyone is wondering which backline is going to come out winners come the final whistle. Quade Cooper v Peter Grant , Digby Ioane v Bryan Habana , Duane Vermeulen v Scott Higginbotham. Just looking at those match ups should excite you as a rugby supporter. Such a tough game to call.
PreJudgement: do I have to say something.... Stormers by 5

Sharks v Lions (Kings Park, Durban)
A number of changes for the Sharks this week sees John Smit and Eugene van Staden starting at prop with Gerhard Mostert replacing the injured Hargreaves. This has opened the door for Ross Skeate's return to SupeRugby after a two year stint at French side Toulon. The Lions will be looking to kick the Sharks while they are down but they have had their fair share of problems with many missed kicks. The Sharks are coming off three losses on the trot but I can assure you that they will not settle for anything less than a bonus point win.

FIVE South Africans in the Ulster Heineken Cup Squad to play the Saints:

That headline is correct, Ulster have announced their squad to play Northampton Saints on Sunday with no fewer than five South African's present.

    From IrishRugby.ie:
ULSTER Squad (v Northampton Saints) - Backs (13): Ruan Pienaar, Paul Marshall, Ian Humphreys, Niall O'Connor, Ian Whitten, Nevin Spence, Paddy Wallace, Darren Cave, Andrew Trimble, Simon Danielli, Craig Gilroy, Jamie Smith, Adam D'Arcy.
Forwards (18): Jerry Cronin, Declan Fitzpatrick, Tom Court, BJ Botha, Paddy McAllister, Bryan Young, Rory Best, Nigel Brady, Andi Kyriacou, Ryan Caldwell, Dan Tuohy, Johann Muller, Tim Barker, Pedrie Wannenburg, Thomas Anderson, Willie Faloon, Chris Henry, Robbie Diack.

SA Players Abroad: Joe van Niekerk (Toulon)

52 test Springbok Loose Forward, Joe van Niekerk is well known by South African and international supporters. Little is known on South African shores as to how well he has been doing at French Club Toulon!

Van Niekerk is captaining the club but more importantly,  captaining them in this weekends Heineken Cup Quarter Final against fellow French Top 14 competitors Perpignan. See Fixtures here. He has also led the club to the Semi Final of the Top 14 Championship as well as finalist in the Amlin Challenge, both in the 2009/2010 season
He had a magnificent junior rugby career and captained SA Schools (He was schooled at King Edward VII School.), SA u19 and SA u21.
Van Niekerk was moved straight into the Springboks squad from the u21's without playing a Currie Cup or SupeRugby game. Joe van Niekerk represented the Lions in Super 12 and the Stormers in Super 14 before attempting a move to Northampton Saints (contract was terminated before arriving at the Club) and finally settling in Toulon.

SA Players Abroad: BJ Botha (Ulster)

Botha is a Durban boy through and through. Born and bread in Durban he was schooled at Durban High School and Kloof High School. All Currie Cup and SupeRugby (Super 14) was played at the Sharks who he represented from 2001-2008.

Botha received a Springbok call up in 2006 and has represented the National team 18 times. He signed for Ulster in 2008 and is currently still playing in Ireland. He faces a tough challenge in Brian Mujati of Northampton Saints in this weekends Heineken Cup Quarter Finals.

SA Players Abroad: Brian Mujati (Northampton Saints)

Mujati is a Zimbabwean born Springbok Rugby player. Ironically he went to the same school as the Springboks 'other' import, Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira who is currently playing for the Sharks. Mujati started his career at the Lions and played there for two seasons before moving to the Stormers.
He has been capped 12 times for the Springboks at prop. 2009 saw him moving to the northern hemisphere to play for the Saints where he has played 33 games for the Club and cemented himself as a first choice player in the team.. He faced a long ban last season as he was accused of pushing referee Nigel Owens in their Heineken Cup Defeat to Perpignan.
Mujati will be hoping this this years Heineken Cup fairs better than last seasons as the Saints are in the last Eight and Face Pedrie Wannenberg's Ulster team in the Quarters. See Fixtures here.

Rare North & South Double Medal

There are Eight teams chasing European glory in the Heineken Quarter Finals this weekend. There are however four players that have a very special and rare opportunity to win the top rugby competitions in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. A SupeRugby medal as well as a Heineken Cup Medal. This has only been done twice before by Rod Kafer ( ACT Brumbies & Leicester Tigers) and Doug Howlett (Blues & Munster)

The four players chasing this honour are:

    Pedrie Wannenberg - Ulster:
Wannenberg has three SupeRugby medals in his trophy cabinet from his time at the Blue Bulls (2007, 2009, 2010) and is looking to help Ulster over the line against Northampton Saints.

    Scott Hamilton - Leicester Tigers:
Hamilton has two SupeRugby medals with the Crusaders (2005, 2006) and will be facing Irish opposition Leinster on April 9 2011.

    Campbell Johnstone - Biarritz Olympique:
Johnstone was teammates with Hamilton at the Crusaders franchise and collected two SupeRugby medals in 2005 & 2006. Johnstone will be propping for the Biarritz side against Toulouse on April 10 2011.

    George Smith - Toulon:
The great Aussie flanker, with 110 appearances for the Wallabies, will be facing off against Perpignan on Saturday for a place in the Heineken Cup Semi-Finals. He has already pocketed two SupeRugby medals with the Brumbies in 2001 & 2004.

See televised schedules here (If available)
    SkySports (United Kingdom)

SA Players Abroad: Pedrie Wannenberg (Ulster)

Wannenberg is well known in South African rugby circles for his time at the Blue Bulls and 20 tests for the Springboks. Pedrie Wanneneberg is currently plying his trade in Ireland for Heineken Cup hopefuls , Ulster Rugby.
If Wannenberg succeeds in winning the Heineken Cup, he will join a very elite group of players (Currently sitting on two with Rod Kafer and Doug Howlett) to win the top tournaments in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, namely the SupeRugby tournament and Heineken Cup.
The Heineken Cup Quarter Finals are being played this weekend, so check your local listings for coverage.

    SupeRugby Round 7 Recap:

Stormers, Reds and Crusaders are the Top three and conference qualifiers as it stands. There are another five teams that will be fighting for the last 3 spots. The reason I say this,  is I don't see the top three falling out of qualification or wild card positions by the end of the tournament. As for my PreJudgements for Round 7, I seem to be getting the hang of things. Well, I like to think so anyway.

    • The Brumbies can all but resign themselves to not being in the knockout stages later this season. They slumped to yet another defeat to the Highlanders. Well done to the Otago team for yet another win. The Brumbies were let down by missed kicks and what seems like no motivation!
    • The Waratahs can see a glimmer of hope in their season with a win over the Chiefs this weekend. They were in command of the game from start to finish. The Waratahs are sitting in 5th spot overall and are currently on target for a wild card entry into the play offs. Maybe they can rescue their season. I think they will.
    • The Blues overcame the Cheetahs as everyone expected. The Blues are thanking the rugby Gods that there are only 80minutes in a rugby game as the cheetahs scored 19 points in 21 minutes to push the NZ side right to the end. Not quite the margin of victory I predicted but the Cheetahs surprised many people and it was fantastic to watch. Well Done.
    • The Bulls got their overseas leg of the tournament off to a great start with a win over the Wellington Hurricanes. This win will largely get attributed to Morne Steyn's penalties and 2 drop goals early on in the first half. Its not the exciting rugby we all want to see but considering the lack of form the Bulls are in, it might be just what they need.
    • The surprise of the weekend was delivered to us by a Richard Kingi try in the 56th minute. The Force raced to a 15-3 lead after 18 minutes but never capitalised on their lead. The Rebels showed true grit and fighting spirit and earned yet another win in their opening season of SupeRugby.
    • The Reds won a close encounter in Johannesburg against the Lions. The Lions never managed to capitalise on two yellow cards issued to the Reds but were never really out of reach of the visiting team. The Lions will rue missed penalties and conversions.
    • The Sharks could not keep a great home record intact as the Stormers won this South African derby by 16-6. This loss moves the Sharks way out of contention and the Stormers into a commanding position on top of the log. The Stormers backline are looking as good on the park as they have been looking on paper.
There were no real surprises in the results this week except for the Rebels win and the Cheetahs and Lions fighting spirit. The Rebels are definitely no walk over as you would expect from a new team into SupeRugby.
